The AI Act classifies systems by risk — from minimal to unacceptable — and outlines requirements based on how your AI tools are used. Most use cases for internal tools, assistants, or automations fall into the “limited” or “low” risk categories. That’s good news — but it still means responsibilities around data handling, transparency, and documentation.

If your business uses AI for customer service, onboarding, recommendation systems, or document summarization, the AI Act won’t block you — but it will shape how you build and deploy.



Evaluating Risk, Readiness, and Responsibility


For SMBs, the first step is to identify whether the AI you’re using or planning falls into a regulated category. Tools that make decisions about employment, credit scoring, biometric tracking, or citizen rights fall into high-risk zones — and require strict governance.

On the other hand, tools that assist with internal documentation, sales support, content drafting, or analytics likely qualify as low-risk. That doesn’t mean you’re free of obligations — you’ll still need to be transparent about AI usage, document your data sources, and ensure human oversight is possible.

The AI Act emphasizes the importance of data quality, explainability, and accountability — even for smaller systems. If you’re training assistants on your company knowledge, for example, you’ll need to demonstrate that the underlying data is reliable, lawful, and up to date.

Start by documenting what AI tools you’re using, where your data comes from, and who is responsible for oversight. This isn’t about legal theater — it’s about building trust with your users and future-proofing your stack.
